Virtual mailbox and a US business bank account: which box it goes in
Short answer: no virtual mailbox gets you approved. Every fintech bank we checked refuses a virtual mailbox, mail-forwarding or CMRA address (a USPS “commercial mail receiving agency”) as your operating/physical address and as your personal address. Where a virtual mailbox does help is the mailing field: cards, IRS letters and state notices after you’re open. So the best virtual mailbox for banking is the one that forwards a debit card cheaply and reliably, not the one that claims to be “bank-friendly.”
Field by field, from each bank’s own help pages
| Bank | Legal / registered address | Operating / physical address | Owner’s home address | Mailing address |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | US physical only No P.O. box or virtual office. | No Refuses virtual, CMRA, mail center, registered agent. | No No mail drops or virtual address services. | Yes Any deliverable US physical address. |
| Relay | Registered agent OK incl. non-US owners. | No Refuses virtual mailbox or mailbox rental. | No | Card shipping Custom address per physical card. |
| Bluevine | No One business-address field; P.O. box, registered agent and “other mail forwarding addresses” refused. | No | Home address offered for the card. | |
| Wise Business | Registered agent OK | No Trading address can’t be virtual or mail forwarding. | No | Not covered on the pages we read. |
Why the “bank-friendly address” pitch doesn’t hold
- Every mailbox provider is a CMRA. USPS rules make mail to a rented box carry “PMB” or “#”, and address-check vendors can see the CMRA flag. A “real street address” is still a mailbox to a bank’s address check.
- Banks ask for proof. Mercury and Wise list lease, utility bill (last 90 days or 3 months), bank statement, or coworking invoice. A Form 1583 mail agreement proves you rent a mailbox, which is the thing they refuse.
- It can bite later. Mercury says an invalid legal address can restrict an open account. Fixing a wrong field after opening is slower than getting it right on day one.
Picking a mailbox for the mailing field
What matters here is card and letter handling, not the address itself. From our main comparison (list prices checked Fri 23 Oct 2026, NZDT) and cost-per-scan page:
- Cheapest to read occasional IRS/state letters — PhysicalAddress Plan 30 ($7.98 entry), 10 scan pages included.
- Predictable if you get regular bank mail — Traveling Mailbox Basic ($15), 35 page scans included.
- Forwarding a replacement card abroad — budget postage plus a per-shipment fee on every provider (Traveling Mailbox: postage + $2). Price one international forward before you choose.
Not checked tonight: traditional banks (Chase, BofA and others) usually want in-branch visits and set their own rules by branch; we only covered the four online banks above. Policies change; read the linked page before you apply.
